Artisan Tattoo

A Tattoo Product for both tattoo artists and enthusiasts that helps users find out what their next tattoo should be, as well as how a tattoo would look on their skin with the help of Augmented Reality.

Problem:

Today, people choose to be tattooed for artistic, cosmetic, sentimental, memorial, religious and spiritual reasons, or to symbolize their belonging to or identifications with particular groups. No matter the reason, getting a tattoo can be a long and arduous process. This requires careful and thoughtful planning, collaboration with the correct artist as well as hoping that this permanent decision is not something they will regret.

Solution:

Artisan Tattoo can provide users with the correct tools when getting a tattoo. This can save money and time for the client, as well as get rid of their fear of regretting a tattoo. There is also a questionnaire where a user can take a quiz that suggests a tattoo/style that will help them decide their next tattoo if they are unsure. As for tattoo artists, this can be a way for them to proudly show off their work while potentially getting more clients with this being an app for both Apple and Android devices.

Research

“Approximately 36% of Americans between the ages of 25-39 have tattoos.”

Having the correct tools when trying to get a tattoo can help users make better decisions about the design, placement and overall satisfaction with their body art. In order to explain how Artisan Tattoo was constructed, I had to do competitor research, conduct user interviews, identify potential user challenges and prioritize solutions focused on enhancing the overall user experience with the product.

When conducting competitor research on tattoo related apps like Inkhunter and Tattoodo, they included a lot of features that could confuse and overwhelm a tattoo enthusiast or more importantly a new user. I decided that for this product, I would focus on creating something that is user-friendly with features that can help them gain inspiration for the next and or first tattoo.

Competitor Analysis

I interviewed 6 people, all through Zoom meetings. Most of them had more than 1 tattoo and they all seemed to have trouble with choosing what type of tattoo they were going to get. I also asked if placement was a big part in the idea that they wanted on them, and most of them agreed that it was the second most important thing, besides the tattoo idea itself.

User Interviews

After conducting user interviews, affinity mapping helped with what was needed to focus on for good user experience.

Define

The primary goals for this product were to provide users with designs that align with their preferences, have the ability to visualize the tattoo in real time and facilitate finding the right artist for the job.

POV Statements and HMW Questions

Two personas emerged from the problem statements, one who was getting into the tattoo world, and another who has experience with them.

User Personas

I developed a storyboard that depicts what it’s like when getting a new tattoo. This played a pivotal role in specifying the points of interaction within the customer’s experience.

Storyboard

When creating the sitemap, the goal was to provide features that users interact with on their daily apps as well as new ones that could help them draw inspiration for their next tattoo.

Design

User flows helped with determining all the paths that a user in order to get to the goal which included trying out the AR feature, contacting a tattoo shop, scheduling an appointment, and figuring out what their next tattoo should be based off of a quiz.

User Flows

Now that the site map was created and all options were explored on how the user would interact with the product, it was time to create the first set of wireframes. The main features that I wanted to showcase were the Augmented Reality feature that could show how the tattoo would appear on clear skin, as well as the questionnaire which would help the user get ideas tailored to them with what type of tattoo they were thinking of getting.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

Branding for this tattoo app focused on accessibility, ease of use, personalization and community engagement as its main focus. Shades of red, black, white and gray were chosen for the primary colors because those are what is usually associated when thinking of tattoos.

Branding

After creating the mid fidelity wireframes on Figma, it was time to gather participants and start testing to see if the flows made sense in order to reach their goal.

Goals:

  • Have users create an account and bookmark a picture on a new folder.

  • Have users sign back in with their existing account, take the questionnaire and book an appointment with a tattoo artist.

Test

Mostly every was able to complete the tasks that were needed. Since it was only mid-fidelity testing, they could only judge the UI by the general layout and there was only one recommendation suggesting to increase the margins between the popup and the edge of the phone screen. There was another recommendation suggesting that the information of the appointment should be autocompleted since they are the ones logged into the app. Overall, they found the flow to be straightforward which meant that there was little to no room for error.

Outcomes from Mid Fidelity Testing

For high fidelity testing, there were 9 participants that were interviewed through Maze. The tasks were to:

  • Create an account and complete the onboarding process.

  • Bookmark a photo and create a public folder, then check their profile to verify that it’s there.

  • Try out the questionnaire and see what type of tattoo they should get and try it out using the AR feature.

  • Book an appointment with a tattoo artist.

High Fidelity Wireframes

  • The participants liked the flow of the initial screens and thought that it was straightforward, although some of them had skipped the onboarding process.

  • For the second task, they found it easy to complete and one person suggested creating labels on the navigation bar to make it easier for new users.

  • For the third task, most of the participants liked the idea of the questionnaire and they all enjoyed the AR feature.

  • For the final task, all participants found it easy to navigate and book an appointment. Some had suggestions to expand the spacing on the calendar, because it made it seem like there was a lot of room on the page. Another had a suggestion on seeing different appointment types (consultation vs actual tattoo appointment).

Test Results

As for iterations, a “skip onboarding” option was included for users who already have experience or they just do not want to do it.

Conclusion

There was another option included after the AR photo has been taken to “download” so users can send it to whoever they would like outside of the app.

In the chat, two buttons were included at the top to specify whether it is a first time meet up with an artist or to skip the consultation because they had already gotten a tattoo from them. There was also minor spacing added in the calendar to fill out the screen.

With a clear definition of the problem and understanding of the target audience, I believe I achieved an optimal outcome for the user.

That being said, since this was the first product that I created for an Apple device, I had a lot of time to focus more on the UI.

In my opinion, the features that I included each played a role for providing a good user experience for this particular group.

All in all, creating Artisan Tattoo was a challenge since there was little information since Augmented Reality technology has not been solidified and is constantly developing every day. An idea like this can help users make better informed decisions which can lead to feeling confident about getting tattoos.

Next Steps

A problem that I could try and explore is how Augmented Reality works on different body types and skin tones. Another route would be to see how it can interact with covering up tattoos.

I would also like to include features for tattoo artists like including stories or a spotlight which can potentially help them gain more clients.

This can help build a community within both the tattoo artists and enthusiasts while offering a more immersive and personalized experience for both parties.
